How long does a British citizen living abroad have to reside

This answer was rated:

How long does a British citizen living abroad have to reside back in the uk so as not to have pay capital gain tax on the sale of a uk property we bought the property 20 years ago
1. To qualify for the principal private residence exemption to Capital Gains Tax, you would have to live in your UK house for more than a year with it being your main residence. This would mean that if it was rented out, you would have to end the tenancy and live in it yourself as if it were your main or principal residence. Then you would be able to sell it tax free.
