A friend gifted my girlfriend and I some money to help

Hi, a friend gifted my girlfriend and I some money to help us settle in our new home. At no point was a verbal or written contract agreed in terms of a loan( this was a gift). That being said we insisted we would pay back what we could when we could. Having paid back almost half we are being threatened with court. What can we do?

We were given £1000 and have repaid £400

If there was no discussion then there is no claim. You are paying it back -that is your only obligation. it was not set down by how much and when. Therefore there should not be a successful claim against you.
There was no determined period or agreement.
