Customer Question

I have a small contracting business and want to expand do I need to employ a quantity surveyor

1. There is no legal or statutory requirement when running a small contracting business to employ a quantity surveyor. It is purely a matter of personal choice as to whether it makes sense financially to take on a Quantity Surveyor full time. It might be much better to just employ the QS on a contract by contract basis as this avoids the need to pay someone when there is no work for them to do. Having your QS as an independent contractor working for themselves, also gives them an incentive to do any job as quickly and efficiently as possible, even if the overall price might be higher because it includes an element of VAT which would not be payable if you had a QS as an employee.

How would I find a QS willing to work on a contract basis. And what's the best way to get my name out there

2. Most QS will work on a contract by contract basis provided they are self-employed. You should contact the Institute of Chartered Surveyors if you wish to get the names of QS near you ( Secondly, I would recommend that you contact a QS directly, and work with one who is suitable to you, rather than seeking to attract all types of QS.
