I made a hotel booking with dec until 5

I made a hotel booking with for 12 dec until 5 jan in costa rica. I had too give my credit card details. I cancelled in November as I could not find any flight direct, but was 2 days out of the cancellation deadline. They then deducted all the costs of US$2,725.56 from my credit card. I contacted who called the hotel and they said that my penalty was the full amount. What are my rights, I have not used the booking that will be from 12 dec. customer service team have said that this is the correct amount as a penalty
