My friend 74 years old bought a fridge freezer from Currys

Customer Question

My friend 74 years old bought a fridge freezer from Currys back in Sept 2013. she went on prearranged holiday came back and had to to throw the rotten contents away. Went back to Currys to get an exchange but was told they didn't have that model but she would be alright as it had the manufacturers warranty they would come out and look at it. They did after a while send engineers to fit modification. Time elapsed as again prearranged holidays appointments etc. The fridge had some sort of intermittent fault. Again back from holiday and other appointments the rotten food was being thrown away. The modification seemed to work for a while but then back to throwing food away. My friend went back to Currys on three or four occasions only to be told they couldn't do anything about it butt would contact manufacturers which they did. Told her it would be alright when they had looked at it again. Hotpoint contacted but quite obviously not able to suit dates to come and fix it. Eventually it ran out of factory warraanty so Hotpoint said they would need £100plus to come out and see to it. My friend refused but was still throwing rotten food away. Eventually Hotpoint said they would come out for £40plus Again my friend refused to pay. In the interum period went back to Currys who again said they could do nothing about. In desperation my friend had to go and purchase another fridge freezer which has worked perfectly from day one. The faulty one is in her garage. I have been in touch with Currys on behalf of my friend and requested them to refund her money and pick up faulty fridge freezer. Their answer to this is as a special gesture they will collect and dispose of it in a safe manner free of charge. Currys had been informed at the time that she would have to buy another one which she did. Quite obviously hoping some satisfactory conclusion could come out of this distasteful affair. Again I have told Currys to refund her £369.99 and remove faulty fridge. Time and again they have said they would pick up faulty fridge freeer freee of charge as a special gesture and safely dispose of it. I have told Currys in that case she will have no option but to take them to Court either them or Hotpoint or both. And look for consequential loss plus compensation for all the stress she gone through oveer this period of time. What sort of case would she have? and am I right in assuming that Currys being retail cannot just wash their hand of this and pass onto manufacturers.
Currys stated at one time during this dispute they would expect a product to last app 5 years. This had a modification done in it's early life which did not cure the problem. My friend is at her wits end.
