My husband had dementia and had been in a care home 5years,

Customer Question

My husband had dementia and had been in a care home for over 5years, he died 2 months ago leaving a credit card debt which I have so far been paying at a reduced rate through step change. Due to care home fees he did not leave any money, his only asset was the small bungalow which we had lived in for over 40 years, we had been married 54 years. I don't know what my position is with regards ***** ***** property, it is willed to me on his death and is my only home, what is my position for paying this credit card debt? I am 76 years old and the thought that I would have to sell to pay the debt is making me ill as I would have no where else to go. Any advice you could give me would be well apreciated.
Thanking you Mrs Jacqueline Vernon.

Hi, thank you for your question and sorry for your loss. Just a bit more information required to fully assist you:-How much is the credit card debt?-Was the home held in joint tenants or tenants in common?-What other assets did he have?-Who is the executor of his estate?

The credit card is for 11 thousand.
The home was in my husbands name only.
He had no other assets.
I myself am the executor.
Many thanks.

Thank you.You should discuss with them options for repayment of the debt, or whether they will accept putting a charge on the property in relation to the debt if they cannot agree to some sort of repayment. You should also check if he had any insurance or payment protection in place to cover for this.I hope this assists you. Thank you for your replies but you have not given me anymore information than I have researched answers on the Internet as I cannot afford to pay anymore money I shall have to leave it at this.

Thank you - unfortunately, that is the only route forward given your husband left debts to deal with.
