Ultimately, it is for them to prove their case. They would need to show you evidence of what they allege and how they work that out. I would face it head on as you are not at fault and be very clear with them that without evidence they have no case. If they show you the necessary documentation, then you will have to consider it.
It sounds as though it is going to be hard for them to prove if their policy was unclear. If so them for a copy of their policy in existence at the time.
