A square based pyramid has a base length of 3cm and a height of 4cm. Find the surface area of the pyramid.

Solution:

given a = 3, h = 4

Surface area = a^2 + 2a*sqrt(a^2/4 + h^2)

= 3^2 + 2*3*sqrt(3^2/4 + 4^2)

= 9 + 6*sqrt(9/4 + 16)

= 9 + 6*sqrt(73/4)

= 34.63 square cm

Answer: 34.63 square cm
