Customer Question

When is/was psychotic depression another way of saying bi-polar disorder? Would a GP be wholly responsible for managing this condition or would a consultant be required? What type of drugs would be typically prescribed?

Thanks for your question.
Bipolar disorder can be two types.
In type 1, we will see manic episodes along with hypo mania and also major depressive episodes.
There can be rapid cycling between depressive and manic episodes as well.
In type 2, hypo mania and depressive episodes are experienced without any manic episodes.
The Bipolar with major depression is best managed by a psychiatrist during acute phase.
Once the symptoms are stabilized, a GP can continue with the medications.
Antidepressants like Fluoxetine, Bupropion can be used to treat the major depression.
However, a mood stabilizer like Olanzapine or lithium also should be used to stabilize the mood and prevent mania episodes.

Best wishes,
