Customer Question

I have had a cholesterol test 2 weeks ago:-results Serum 5.6, HDL 1.74, total cholesterol 3.2.

The last test I had 6 months ago the readings were HDL 2.01, LDL 3.85 Total 6.6

I am confused as the result pattern is different. My recent test hasn't given me the LDL reading which is the important reading so although my overall reading seems to of improved, not sure that it is still good enough.

I would consider myself reasonably fit, I eat a healthy diet and exercise 4- 5 week. To bring my cholesterol down i introduced more oily fish and a made up muesli consisting of bran, oats almonds, Q10, almond milk etc and reduced my alcohol intake over the week.

If these readings are still too high, so I need to go on statins? ( I am very reluctant to go on them there any supplement I could take to reduce levels further) I am 49 yr old lady.

Many thanks for your help

Hello from JA
You are correct that your overall has improved, so most likely the ldl is lower.
But your good cholesterol, the HDL as dropped a bit, which is not optimal

However, more aerobic exercise can improvem this.
Fish oil might help improve it.

Total should be below 6.2, unless you have risk factors, then 5.2.
Your HDL in fact is still good.....

So I would just look at the LDL which is missing, but it looks to me like you are OK.

See these mayo guidelines, they are very clear.

OK. If you have further questions or details, use reply to expert.
