My wife after a heart replacement valve contracted clostridium

Customer Question

My wife after a heart replacement valve contracted clostridium difficile and has since had
a loose bowel problem..The hospital said the clopstridium difficile cleared up but I,m of
the opinion that this bug has somehow upset her system.Do you agree? Is it possible
to get a second opinion as we are not happy with the diagnosis.

Hello, this is Dr K. Answers are not medical advice and do not constitute a Dr/patient relationship. I look forward to helping you today.

Hello and welcome.

About 25% of patients with C Dif do become reinfected with a different strain. Be sure she is tested again by giving another stool sample.

This bacteria does upset the normal flora of the GI tract. Probiotics can be helpful in restoring this balance. Probiotics are bacteria and yeast that are necessary for normal gi functioning. A yeast called Saccharomyces boulardii, in conjunction with antibiotics, might help prevent recurrent C. difficile infections.

You can purchase an over the counter probiotic called Align that may be helpful. Of course, check with her Dr first.

I hope this helps.
