Ask a Doctor and Get an Answer to Your Medical Question ASAP
This is Dr. David
sounds like your son has a very serious problem with alcohol.
most likely he is experiencing black outs from excessive alcohol use.
he needs to get treatment for his alcohol use as soon as possible. or else his alcohol use and addition will get worse.
in patient detox and rehabilitation treatments would be the best.
he needs also to see a neurologist and get a neuro exam and get a scan of his brain as well.
my son is not a habitual drinker only consumes alcohol on special occasions
then that is more important for him to see a neurologist and get a brain MRI scan
especially if he has family history for things like aneurysms
he could have developed a TIA or mini stroke.
or a small seizure.
sometimes alcohol can bring on seizures in some patients.
is he willing to see a doctor and get a brain scan?
does he have a doctor he can see?
is there any specific reasons why he would need this ie myv sisters death
if he lost memory for 30 minutes this is not normal.
he needs a scan of his brain and neurological testing to find out why this occurred.
can this just be caused by unusual alcohol intake ?
it might be, but I would not just rest on that
without more brain testing and neurological evaluation.
he needs more testing to be sure.

whyb do some people react to alcohol in this way
some people can be allergic to alcohol
they can have variation of how much alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme available to metabolize alcohol.
if they are dehydrated when drinking, this can worsen dehydration.
and the alcohol can have sedating effects on the brain.
and can cause short term memory loss.
can you give me a reason he can explain to his wife of one day why he reacated like this?
without more testing it is hard.
the only thing right now is the alcohol he was drinking which caused the short term memory loss.
I have no idea how much he drank that day of the memory loss.
if he drank a lot, that could cause the memory loss.
he only had perhaps 6 beers bottles
6 beers is a lot and is enough to cause him to black out of memory.
on his wedding day? in scotland? no do not agree sorry
he is not willing to see a doctor over this episode of memory loss?
yes of couse he will go but i need to have a reason he is not an alcoholic
just having the 30 minutes of memory loss is enough to see a doctor and get an evaluation of his brain with a brain scan.
he could have had a small stroke or a small TIA or transcient ischemic attack which could have caused the memory loss.
