I will give you my explanation then provide you with a good link.


Diverticulitis is an infection in the large intestine, usually on the left side, which occurs in the presence of 'diverticulum'.... small outpouchings of the large bowel that occur over time. These small defects in the intestine can get small bits of food or fecal matter entrapped in them and then become infected with bacteria. This produces pain and can proceed to abscess. If not caught early it can be a quite serious condition sometimes requiring surgery.


Diverticulosis is the presence of the small outpouchings as described above. It can cause bleeding with bowel movements.

As you can see, if caught early, the treatment is with oral antibiotics. This condition can re-occur, and if it becomes a chronic problem surgery is sometimes performed and is usually curable.
