Welcome and thank you for the question.

There can be different causes for waking up with a headache. The commonest cause is a tension headache. You may have tense or pinched muscles in your neck. When you are sleeping you are putting extra pressure on a pinched muscle which causes a headache when you wake. Once the muscle is released when you get up,the pain will be gone.

A second cause is migraine. Migraine can cause a dull throbbing pain when you wake up and which gradually decreases.

High blood pressure can also cause headache when you wake up.

Please consult your doctor for a checkup.
