Hello, this is Dr K.. Answers are not medical advice and do not constitute a doctor/patient relationship. I look forward to helping you today.
Sciatica is pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve which which emerges from your lower back and travels through your hips and buttocks and then down each leg. Often, sciatica affects only one side of your body but can affect both. There can also be associated back pain. The underlying cause may be a herniated disk in your back.

An orthopedic Dr can often get a good idea of what is going on by physical exam. Then additional studies can be order such as xray and mri.

Antiinflammatory medications and physical therapy is used first. Steroids can be used to decrease inflammation. Sugery is often considered as a last resort or if there is weakness, incontinence or progressive pain.

I hope this helps.
