Hi my girlfriend is 1 month pregnant. She now has a tooth infection but I've been told that extraction and antibiotics are bad for the baby. On the other hand, infection is also bad for the baby. Not to mention the pain & stress my girlfriend is going through! Help!

Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

some antibiotics can be given when pregnant.

Dr. David :

amoxicillin can be given during pregnancy.

Dr. David :

she might be able to have the tooth extracted with just local anesthesia

Customer: But isn't LA bad for baby in 1st trimester?
Dr. David :

no, local anesthesia can be used.

Dr. David :

Antibiotics such as penicillin, amoxicillin, and clindamycin can also be used during pregnancy.

Customer: I'm so worried about her using antibiotics. Is amoxicillin really safe at 1 month? She already has an infection. Is that dangerous?
Dr. David :

local anesthesia with lidocaine injected into the gums to numb the gums can be used during pregnancy.

Dr. David :

the infection carries more danger than amoxicillin.

Dr. David :

yes, amoxicillin can be used in 1 month.

Customer: What dosage?
Dr. David :

typically 500mg three times a day for 7-10 days or so.
