I am Dr Ken and I will be helping you today.

Is this the first time you had nose bleed? Are you on any medicines {blood thinners}? Do you have upper respiratory tract infection or have any diagnosed medical condition?

Nose bleed indicates rupture of tiny vessels within the inside of the nose. The cause can be varied - trauma {most common - dry nose with piking}/ use of anticoagulant medicines/ bleeding disorder/ exposure to excess heat. High blood pressure or infection may increase the risk of having sudden nose bleed.

Immediate step - Pinch the soft parts of the nose together between the thumb and index finger. Lean forward slightly with the head tilted forward. Hold the nose for at least five minutes. Repeat as necessary until the nose has stopped bleeding. Stay calm. Keep the head higher than the level of the heart. Do not lay flat or put your head between your legs. Apply ice (wrapped in a towel) to nose and cheeks {this may help sometimes}.

Few things help to prevent this happening again - Do not blow your nose/ do not strain during bowel movement/ Avoid alcohol, smoking/ use some lubricant in the nose if it is dry/ keep blood pressure in control.

If the bleeding does not stop or if there are associated symptoms like loss of consciousness, dizziness than you will need immediate medical help.

Wish you well.
