Hi, I am 35 year old female. I am getting quite irregular

Customer Question

I am 35 year old female. I am getting quite irregular menstrual cycles and was wondering if you could shed any light on it..see cycle dates below..I only began taking the contraceptive pill in August 2012 ( Cerazette) and was I wondering if it has anything to do with this? I am also taking 75mg of Eltrozin daily for a thyroidectomy in April 2010..
I have been to see my local GP about this and he has just told me to keep an eye on it??? you can imagine it is quite inconvenient and draining having such a long and irregular cycle.... Period start - period end dates :5Nov - 29 Nov, 5 Dec-10 Dec, 17 Dec - 23 Dec, 16 Jan - 23 , 26 Jan -30, 10 Feb-15, 5 Mar-7, 14 Mar - still ongoing... My current period and Nov period dates are concerning me...

Hi--can I ask if you've seen a gynecologist about this and have you had a pelvic exam and pelvic ultrasound along with a check of your estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels? Have you ever been pregnant? Finally do you know what your most recent TSH level was?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.

No to all of the above..My last FSH level was borderline normal....I have received an all clear from a recent smear test also..last blood test was about 2 months ago

Elaine--I was asking about your TSH level--concerning your thyroid. If that's what you mean do you know the value?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.

When I was given the results from my local surgery over the phone I was told that they

were borderline normal /under active..???

OK Elaine--before you started the pill what were your cycles like and has it just been in the last few months that it's become so irregular?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.

As far as I recall they were MOSTLY regular..give or take a week...

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

MOSTLY regular..give or take about 5 days..lasting 5-8 days each

OK Elaine--and we can continue after this if you'd like. First off, Cerazette is a progesterone only pill--most BCP's are a combination of both estrogen and progesterone. It could be that all you need is to be switched to something like Loestrin which is one of those types. However this could be a problem with your not being fully treated for your low thyroid and unless your TSH level is close to 1.0 I would increase your thyroid medication. Finally I would get a pelvic ultrasound to make sure you don't have urterine fibroids which could be the cause of the irregular periods

I did ask whether the pill was an issue and my doctor said he didn't think so...Is this why I am having really long and heavy periods?

Expert:  Dr. Chip replied 4 years ago.
Yes--I think that is the most likely cause here and it would just be a simple matter to switch you to a combination hormone pill--if your doctor isn't willing to do that you need to consult a gynecologist and with the problem you're having that would be the most sensible thing to do to fully evaluate this Elaine
