This is Dr. David
I am sorry you have had a stroke.
strokes can be very serous and damage parts of your brain which control your hand.
usually it can take years and years of physical therapy and occupational therapy to train other parts of your brain to start to control the nerves which control the hand.
was the area in the brain which controls the hand damaged in the stroke or cerebral vascular accident?
i have started moving my thumb already
have you been doing physical therapy and occupational therapy so far?
that is good you are moving your thumb already.
no not yet, my stroke was 18 years ago, the surgeryto open my hand was three months ago, i have just had the cast and brace tasken off
wow.
you should have been doing more occupational therapy right after you had the stroke.
are there any items you could recommend to help withthe exercises
it takes an occupational therapist to assess your arm and hand to recommend specific hand and finger and arm exercises for your situation.
I can't see or examine you.
you have to see a physical therapist to get exercises recommended for you.
has your surgeon set you up to see a physical therapist or occupational therapist?
i understand that totaly but as I mentioned I have been given the go ahead to try gaining more movement.
yes i have seen OT who has advised this
that is good.
you should go back and see the OT and continue to work on exercising and stretching
sometimes massage therapy can help
sometimes acupuncture can help as well.
ok then, thankyou for your help.
sometimes ultrasound therapy to the muscles can help
you are welcome
best of luck to you
