Hi, started with mild sore throat, then gland in neck, jaw, chest and armpit are tender to touch no swelling. Symptoms change throughout the week and Aldo sometimes have reflux acid and burping. Had this for approx 5 weeks and a series of blood tests that came back normal. Any ideas?

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Hi there. Thank you for your question. I will be helping you out with your queries

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Are you on anything for your reflux?

Customer: Ok thanks
Customer: No
Dr. Shahzad MD :

I think that your symptoms may be related to acid reflux and you may want to try something like OTC zantac or prescription omeprazole (which is a prescription medication in the UK).

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Use these medications for at least four to eight weeks.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

If, however, your glands (lymph nodes) are large i.e. more than 1-2 cm in size and multiple then they should be biopsied.

Customer: Can I get them over the counter or doctor? It's just on one side which is left side?
Dr. Shahzad MD :

Zantac is over-the-counter.

Customer: They are not swollen, just throb sometimes but moves around from ear, chest then under armpit
Dr. Shahzad MD :

Omeprazole is also OTC in the UK

Dr. Shahzad MD :

which is a stronger medication.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Just confirmed.

Customer: Ok thanks I am not getting much heartburn just acid every now and then and burps
Dr. Shahzad MD :

Its still worth a try.

Customer: Would you ask the doctor to be referred to a specialist
Dr. Shahzad MD :

Get omperazole which is OTC 40 mg once daily for four to eight weeks.
I would however go back to your doctor if your symptoms do not improve and if the lymph nodes are large.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

If your symptoms do not improve in a week or so then I would definitely like to refer you.

Customer: Ok lymph are not large or swollen sometimes tender or throb
Dr. Shahzad MD :

Thats good

Dr. Shahzad MD :

If your lymph nodes are still not responding you may require a course of antibiotic for a possible infection and for that I think that a referral should be best.

Customer: Would the infection show up in blood test?
Dr. Shahzad MD :

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Did you have any blood tests?

Customer: Blood tests are clear
Dr. Shahzad MD :

Sometimes the white cell count is raised or the neutrophils are raised when there is an infeciton.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Dr. Shahzad MD :

But if those were clear then you can wait a week or two and try the omeprazole and see if those help.

Customer: Ok thanks
Dr. Shahzad MD :

You are most welcome
Take care
