From what you are describing it sounds like a sebaceous cyst.

My GP said the same thing back then but I had a black speck on it then, which has got bigger

The black speck is called as the punctum or the opening of the cyst.

It can get bigger with time and that in itself is not something to worry about.

I think it may be a good idea to have it removed, he did offer at the time, I guess i panicked a bit
