My husband has just been told he has high blood pressure. He is getting checked every 2weeks at the moment. But results in recent blood tests have revealed he could be anaemic, after having another blood test they say his blood count is low,(what does this mean). The GP has referred him to a Gastroenterologist. What does all this mean, what could be happening to him.
I am Dr Ken and I will be helping you today.
Blood consists of plasma {liquid} and cells {red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets}. Anemia indicates low RBC count or reduced ability of the red blood cells to carry oxygen. Low blood count thus can mean low RBC, low WBC or low platelets. In some infections WBC count may get low too {as he has cough - I though of infection}. The low count generally gets back to normal with treatment. There is nothing to worry of.
I would get chest x ray {to see for the cause of cough}.
Let me know if you want me to explain anything in more details.
Wish him well.

Can all this mean there is possibly be more serious. The cough only developed while trying Ramapril.
Only low blood counts do not indicate specifically a serious issue. However further investigations like follow up blood tests/ chest x ray, ultrasound abdomen would give us more answers.
It also depends on which blood cell count is low and what is the severity?
