Hi there,
I would really appreciate some advice. I have always had anxiety- type problems since I was young (OCD from childhood, post natal depression/ anxiety after having my son and bouts of depression).
A year ago I left my son's father because he was violent, controlling and manipulative. I'd tried so hard to make it work for our son's sake but once my son witnessed things aged 2, I realised I could no longer shield him and I left with my son, moving back to my home town 80 miles away. My son still sees his father every other weekend.
I now have a new home, near my supportive family, a new job, my son has settled in at nursery, and I have a loving and supportive boyfriend who loves my son and I. The trouble is I have realised recently that I am definitely not over what happened with my ex. I feel very anxious generally in many areas of my life, I feel panicky at the thought of ever having a child with my boyfriend because I'm terrified of trusting someone that much, and being so let down and hurt again, I'm heart broken by the break up of my son's family and almost feel like I'm grieving for it, I carry so much guilt for bringing him into such an environment because whilst I don't regret having my son for a second, I do feel bad because I knew what my ex was like. I also carry to much guilt for moving my son 80 miles away from his father, and worry about how this whole situation will affect him mentally.
The thing is, I already know why I am an anxious person with low self esteem, and I already understand the factors contributing to how I feel now I have had counselling previously, and I felt that the counsellor was telling me what sort of impressions they were getting about my feelings, and what I need to achieve, i.e. to adapt etc. But I already know all of this, I am very in tune with my own psyche, I just need help to move on, get over what happened and let go of the guilt I feel over my son. I need to get over this anxiety and sadness because its making my physically ill. do you think anyone can help me, and what sort of therapy?
Reasonable question.
Cognitive behavioral therapy with a PhD clinical psychologist.
Temporarily at least, an SSRI medication.
This is for anxiety and is not addicting such as are the benzodiazapines.
This would be a standardized approach with known effectiveness.
OK, so that is an initial answer….
