Dear Doctor Both my armpits have been swollen for years

Dear Doctor
Both my armpits have been swollen for years and I'm too scared to go to the doctor in case they tell me I have cancer. I've let it ruin my life and now I want to have a life so I don't know what to do as the longer I've left it the more I'm scared that the worse the diagnosis will be. The worst thing is as I've aged the skin has sagged also so I'm also worried that I will have excessive skin. I am 36 years old. One of my armpits has been swollen for over 10 years.
Hi. Can you tell me more about this please--do you actually have lumps or hard areas in your armpits?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.
No they both seem to be soft. A bit cushiony no real hard bits
OK Has this swelling gotten larger over the years? Any problems like this in your groins or in your neck?

No they haven't grown larger they are the same size as when they first appeared except I think the oldest one looks smaller because the skin around it has sagged. No I don't have any other lumps anywhere else and never have. I don't know why I've left it so long but I'm really frightened about what to do with them.
OK. I fully understand what's going on here. Many people don't go to a doctor about something like this because they think if they don't go then they won't be told they have something like cancer. I can assure you from what you've told me that this isn't cancer. It sounds as though your may have either cysts in those areas or perhaps something called a lipoma--a totally benign fatty tumor. Nothing at all serious but if they are bothersome for you they can be excised along with the excess skin with a fairly simple surgical procedure. Don't be afraid--just go to a doctor and have him take a look

Ok thank you very much. They are quite large though and painless. Do you really think that it may not be cancer? I'm also scared at the thought of any surgery in case it goes wrong. I know I should go and get them sorted because I want to get married and have children etc but all the above fears have just prevented all of this. They are unsightly to look at and I'm always keeping my arms covered because of them.
I really don't think this is cancer. And I understand your fears about surgery. At least if you go to a doctor he can tell you like I have that this is not cancer and that will take away most of your fears and then you can work on whether or not you'd like to have the surgery

Ok thank you very much. I do appreciate it. I want to get them removed at least you have given me the confidence to go to the doctors about this. Thank you again. :-)
My Pleasure but let me know how it goes and please remember to rate my service to you
