My big toe on left foot has been numb for some time. Should I be worried ?
Henry Marsh
This is Dr. David

you should see your doctor about this

this numb big toe could be from many causes

if you have diabetes, you could have nerve damage to cause this numbness.

you could have a pinched nerve in your foot or ankle

you might need an xray of your foot to check for problems.

blood test is good. fasting blood test can check for diabetes and electrolyte problems like low potassium or low magnesium which can affect nerves.

I am glad you mentioned it to your doctor.

do you have diabetes?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.
No I don't have diabetes, I was more concerned that it could be an early sing of MS
MS is rare and unlikely

more likely a pinched nerve in your foot or leg

MS would cause other symptoms such as severe fatigue

you would need brain MRI scans and spinal tap to check for MS.

I doubt this is from MS

This is related to a pinched nerve in your low back. big toe numbness is common with lumbar 5 nerve root impingement. It is from your backIt is not diabetes or MS or anything else like that get your back checked

Thankyou for this reassuring advice.
This is Dr.Phil. I am a different expert. I gave you the advice about coming from your low back. That is where it is coming from. I see patients all the time with big toe numbness from low back issues. The nerve root is pinched as it exits the spine and this presents in the foot interestingly. I would appreciate a positive rating for my service. Thanks
