My daughter (age 5) started with a cough 2 weeks ago. Dry and irritating. Slight runny nose, no fever or other symptoms. It now seems to be becoming more chesty and wakes her up at night. She also has coughing fits in the daytime and seems to find it hard to catch her breath. I took her to the doctor yesterday and he listened to her chest and said it was all clear. Does that mean it can't be whooping cough? He also said her throat was looking good, no glands raised and only a slight pinkness in one ear.

Seems likely to be a viral infection.
Coughing fits can happen even in a viral infection.
Also a runny nose goes more in favor of a viral infection.
It may take a few more days for the coughing to settle.
So I would not worry too much particularly since she was examined by her doctor yesterday and the chest and throat were clear.
Let me know if you have more questions.

so would the chest not sound clear with whooping cough? Thanks

It would sound clear but it would be very unlikely to have whooping cough if she was vaccinated.
Whooping cough is one of the diseases for which all kids are vaccinated.

She is not vaccinated, and the whooping cough vaccine is not very effective.

So now how worried would you be?

I would have given an antibiotic considering that she is not vaccinated.
Also considering that her cough has lasted for more than two weeks, I would have certainly given an antibiotic.
I would recommend that she be seen again and be prescribed an antibiotic.
