My sisters had muscular dystrophy - I had my sons tested in

Customer Question

My sisters had muscular dystrophy - I had my sons tested in 1981 both were ok. My question is could my son be a carrier and pass it on to any children he has?

This is Dr. David

I am sorry about your sister.

Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy are conditions which are inherited in an X-linked recessive pattern.

you sister most likely received two X chromosomes with mutations in the DMD gene

if your son didn't have this gene mutation from his testing back in 1981, he would not be able to carry the gene and pass it down to his children

so you don't have to worry about his children having muscular dystrophy
