I have a 5 year old son who has been suffering from tics, which have not been diagnosed by my docter yet. He has been having them for 8 Months now. Started with motor tics such as head and shoulder jerking, twitching and then eye blinking. Only recently he has started to introduce vocal tics such as screaming, shouting and saying words out loud. Sleeping has been a problem as he finds that all the vocal ticks become more present hence the reason why it becomes harder for him to settle down at night. However at some point they disappeared completely for a few weeks then re emerged again and now become more constant.
Hi. Has your doctor done any tests or considered a neurology consult?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Not as yet. My Docter told this go and short live so nothing to worry about.

I however feel my son has not been his normal self and clearly is finding it difficult to deal with these involuntary movements

Which is he reason why I have took on this myself to research and find out what I can do for him.
I understand--when these happen how long do they go on?

What tests are done to find out what
I first just need to know how long this tic episodes last please
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
When engaged in activity they are not there. When my son is instructed or playing with other children starts to tick. Which last 4/5hours until he's concentrating again with something. In the hours he's ticking there's approximately a 2/3 mins stop then it goes on. When I am taking with him it doesn't happen but once we stop taking they come out.

Today more so then usual I noticed about 60/70 tics in a time frame of 4hrs.
OK. There are two possibilities here
One would be Tourette's syndrome which is somewhat difficult to diagnosis as far as tests go but seeing a neurologist for a full evaluation and an MRI of his brain would be the way to go.
The other possibility would be absence seizures--not grand mal seizure with the falling to the floor and jerking, but ones where there is a disruption in thinking and tics like his. This would take both an MRI of the brain and an EEG to diagnose
At this point, I would refer him to a pediatric neurologist for the evaluation, the workup, and treatment
Let me know if you need more information please

Thankyou Docter that was very helpful, just one last question? If the child has the symptoms I mentioned can they go away completely and can torrettes leave a child as they grow older? Thank you
Yes Tourette's--which I think is much more likely with him than a seizure disorder--often does disappear as he gets older. Less likely but also possible with absence seizures.
But since he's bothered so much with this right now I'd have him see a neurologist
Let me know how he does and please remember to rate my service to you
