I have had chronic conjunctivitis year. In the last

This answer was rated:

I have had chronic conjunctivitis for 1 year. In the last month I have had a feeling that there is phlegm in my throat when I swallow. I get tonsil stones occasionally and just recently I have had a little difficulty swallowing food-this is just occasionally. I have a blocked feeling in one ear and when I blow my nose my ears sort of pop. I have a slight sore throat also.
My doctor gave me tablets which I believe to be like sudafed.
Any ideas?
Hi.For one thing it sounds like you have Eustachian tube dysfunction and actually the Sudafed could make that worse. You need to try a saline nasal irrigation kit and I would put you on a week's course of prednisone for this. You may also need antibiotics for a possible sinus infectionAsk your doctor about that and let me know if for now you need any more information please

I would like to add that I have started swimming and on a few occasions I have had water in the ear that is feeling blocked. I also burp a lot after I eat anything
Have you been checked for gastric acid reflux?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
That could also be part of the problem and you might try two weeks of Prilosec or Zantac to see if that helps.

Ok thanks. I have myself worried sick that it is something very sinister.
I am extremely tired in the morning and sometimes my muscles ache even when I haven't done much exercise that day.
Sorry about the long list but thought I should mention everything
None of this sounds at all sinister
I would check your thyroid function and see if you might be anemic for those last symptoms
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I had a B12 folate and iron test done at the start of the year. Along with thyroid function, anti ccp, crp, smac. Fbc, autoimmune screen. They all came back ok at that time
Was a sleep study ever considered?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
No I havent.
Not to say for sure you have sleep apnea but that could account for your morning fatigue
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Do you think I may have a number of different things going on or could one thing cause all the symptoms (chronic conjunctivitis, blocked ear, feeling of phlegm when swallowing, burping, slight sore throat)
No, not just one thing--several different things
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Ok so just to clarify...what should I get checked for?
Gastric acid reflux and I would also screen you for a possible H pylori stomach infection
I'd consider the sleep study
Also I'd get a ct of your sinuses to look for a chronic sinusitis

What about my conjunctivitis? Any ideas?
Is it viral and how exactly was the diagnosis made--what are your symptoms?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Viral and bacterial swabs both came back negative. Had eye exam done so that and my symptoms I suppose lead to that diagnosis. My eyes are only sore now as soon as I close my eyes at night and first thing in the morning. The only thing that helps is hylofort eye drops which I use every night. I have been on steroid eye drops which helped a little at the time.
Did an ophthalmologist call this conjunctivitis?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Yes. They discharged me from the eye hospital saying that it will clear up in a couple of months. I no longer have green sticky eyes and no itch or anything. I do have a gritty feeling every night-as soon as I close my eyes and then they sling in the morning. Bright lights are not my friend first thing either
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
They sting in the morning
OK--you mentioned an autoimmune screen above--what exactly did that consist of?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I'm not sure. I think the ophthalmologist I saw initially wanted me tested for scleroderma
Was Sjogren's syndrome also considered?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Well I paid to have a private consultation and I asked about that and he said it would be number 20 on the things he thought it could be! He just said chronic conjunctivitis (he put me on low dose steroid eye drops for 2 months-they did nothing!)
Well, I'd have you see a rheumatologist for further autoimmune testing since Sjogren's could explain the eye problem, the stomach problem and possibly the ear problem
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Thankyou. Do you think I could ask for all the tests etc above from my gp?
Yes you can but Sjogren's can be a little difficult to diagnose so I personally would have you see the rheumatologist rather than try to test for it myself

Thankyou for all your help
My pleasure but please let me know how it goes
