I'm Paul. I'm taking Sodium Valproate 1200 mg

This answer was rated:

Hi. I'm Paul. I'm taking Sodium Valproate 1200 mg for Bipolar Disorder. I have found it effective at quelling my mixed episodes. I would like to know if this medication loses its effectiveness over time? IE would I build up a tolerance to it? Out of all the meds I took this is the best at relieving symptoms with least side effects. Can I use this medication long term and does it work long term? Like lithium!?
Thank you
Hi there,This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.Yes the effectiveness may decrease over long term use.Your brain can get tolerant to existing dose. The dose can be increased further as needed safely.Since you are taking it without problem, increased dose should be well tolerated usually.Liver function, blood count, cognitive function should be checke periodically by your doctor.Yes this is as effective as lithium.Best wishes,It was my pleasure to help you today. If I have answered all your questions, Please rate my response Excellent (click on the 5th star). Please bookmark my profile for asking further questions! This is the link to my profile:
