This answer was rated:

partner had malaria falciparum in June. Has also had complications with iron deficiency from heavy periods (on-going issue pre malaria). ten years ago had CFS for period of time as teenager. long period then when well apart from iron deficiency. She is struggling to recover with bouts of significant tiredness. job involves lots of travel. is there anything she can do to help assist speed recovery?
This is Dr. David

she needs to get blood tests to check for ebstein barr virus infection which can cause severe fatigue.

thyroid hormone levels need to be checked.

iron, ferritin, B12, vitamin D levels all need to be checked.

medicaitons like provigil can help some patients who have chronic fatigue syndrome.

let me know if you have questions.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

she has had tests. all fine. ferritin now normal but low end. thyroid fine. b12 fine. what is pro vigil? is there anything non-medication that is good advice?

provigil is a medication used to help patients who have sleep disorders

she will benefit from regular exercise.

if she snores at night time, she could have sleep apnea which can cause fatigue.

she should avoid smoking and alcohol.

is she exercising at this point?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

slowly when feeling able to. no snoring.

if she is overweight?

she should continue to slowly exercise

if she is overweight, loosing weight can help improve her energy levels

eating healthier foods can help improve her energy levels

eating more fruits and vegetables can help her energy levels.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

no slim. exercising on bike as and when she can but appears tired a lot at moment.

what is her diet like? what does she eat?

how much sleep is she getting per day?

is she working during the day? what work does she do?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

diet is good - veggie but occasionally eats fish and chicken to boost iron.

sleep is inconsistent - often gets 6 hours and is then awake

works as self-employed in developing countries. lots of travel. hours vary and she has cut right down at moment since malaria.

severe fatigue can be very common after malaria infection.

sometimes it can take up to a full year or longer for fatigue to improve after an infection.

she might just need more time.

steak, liver, spinach, kale are better sources of iron. make sure she takes iron foods with vitamin C
