I had surgery cancer (Dukes A) on September 16th

Customer Question

I had surgery for bowel cancer (Dukes A) on September 16th and then a reversal ileostomy on 9th December. Since the last operation I have had pretty well continuous constipation (uncomfortably/drastically relieved with senokot and prune juice) and then, on the advice of my surgeon, Movitol. I started Movitol last Thursday twice a day and produced many small stools until I began to get diarrhea on Sunday and stopped taking it. Since this morning, I have had diarrhea (and on two occasions was unable to get to the toilet in time). Can I now take diazepam to treat the diarrhea and return to Movitol if and when I get constipated? My surgeon said that I would be on a rollercoaster between the two states for the next four weeks but I didn't ask him this question. Can you help?

This is Dr. David
it sounds like you need to add in more fiber to your diet like metamucil fiber along with stool softeners and laxatives like Movitol.
you might need to use the movitol only once or twice a week.
diazepam is not used to treat diarrhea. it is an anti-anxiety agent used to decrease anxiety
I would stop the movitol and senokot and prunes if you are having diarrhea now but still continue the fiber and drink plenty of water and eat bananas and rice which can slow down your bowels.
if you get constipated again, return back to senokot and prune juice first and continue on the fiber and see if that helps
you may not even need the movitol if the senokott and prune juice work to fix the constipation.
