My husband's father has advanced dementia - he is 88. How do

Customer Question

My husband's father has advanced dementia - he is 88. How long do you think he would have had dementia before he got to this stage. He was a very heavy drinker all his adult life. Thank you

This is Dr. David

I am sorry about your husband's father's dementia

his heavy drinking can definitely cause mental decline and poor blood vessels and can cause dementia as well.

without knowing his medical course and knowing over the years, it can be very difficult to know when his dementia started.

his dementia could have started a few months or a few years ago possibly.

was he married? did his wife pass away already. if she were alive, she may know when he started to have more confusion of his thinking as a sign of dementia.
