Hi Im looking for some paediatric advice for my son who has been diagnosed with a low ferritin. we have had conflicting advice between GP and Paeditrciain
JA: Have you seen a doctor about this yet? What medications are you taking?
Customer: yes GP and peadiatrician he is on Omeprazole and movicol and has been prescribed Sytron by GP and Paediatrican but the advice for management has been conflicting
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the Expert should know?
Customer: He has had a Adenotonsillectomy in September, born at term by normal delivery, has food aversions, reflux and a possible lactose intollernace otherwise developmentally normal and well in himself

he had routine bloods in July, only showed a low ferritin, GP felt not to treat, we saw a peadiatrician last week, who felt it should be treated

What about a stool test?

both prescribed Sytron
GP- 2.5mls TDS with repeat bloods in 4 weeks
Paeds- 2.5 mls OD with no repeat bloods and treat for 3 months

not clear in BNF or anywhere that i can find that states how to treat low ferritin in children, only if low HB

I think he need further investigations

He should have a stool test to see if there are any worms in that

Secondly blood in stool should be ruled out too

Thirdly if these tests are normal then he should have test for Celiac disease

He can take the Sytron but definitely needs to look for the cause of low ferritin

he had a cealiac screen which was negative
Ok great we will go back to the GP
What is the correct dose for this please 2.5 TDS or OD? and should he have a repeat blood test an dif yes when?

If her hemoglobin is normal so he can take 2.5ml once daily
