I have had a runny nose and been coughing up flehm (white)

This answer was rated:

I have had a runny nose and been coughing up flehm (white) for a couple of weeks . The cough is more of a concern. How to solve? I am (due to Covid) stuck in Vietnam and cannot get to a doctor due to local lock down. The cough in the mornings was more severe 2 weeks ago it is a lot better now.

Hi there kindly answer following questions for further advice:

Age? Male or female?

Past medical history?

Any medicines using?

Smoking and alcohol?

Customer: replied 10 days ago.
Male, 71 years old Past medical history.. nothing really, took some Ventolin for Asthma many years ago, not had a asthma attack for years, fit and in good condition. Not taking any medicines, Never smoked (did serious sports until 10 years ago (knee problem stopped my activities, no more running, just gym (4 hours) ever other day now) Drink a bit, on average 2 - 3 bottles of wine/ week (usually when eating)

bringing up phlem sometimes when taking short breaths

Hi there you might have some chest infection including some viral

Did you have COVID test?

Did you had COVID vaccination?

Customer: replied 10 days ago.
OK - seems a good diagnosis - FYI - my wife had a COVID examination 2 weeeks ago (after my symptoms started) and she has no Covid, I presume same for me.
Customer: replied 10 days ago.
Me, no did not hve Covid Test and am running normal temperature - get checked at least every 2 days when going to supermarket.... temperature ranged 35.8 to 36.5

In that case it must be some chest infection which could be viral. From history it looks like you are recovering but might be some remaining inflammation in the lung tubes

Customer: replied 10 days ago.
I believe this is the case (had something similar once or twice before) last 10years - and on Covid. No Vaccinations possible here at the moment as no Vaccine available
Customer: replied 10 days ago.
I have been stuck in Vietnam now for over 1 year, no travel possible
Customer: replied 10 days ago.
Also, have a doctor in Hanoi (2 hours by car from here) but due to lock down, cannot get there currently.

Ok in that case I would advise:

  • get plenty of rest

  • drink lots of water to loosen the mucus and make it easier to cough up

  • raise your head up while sleeping using extra pillows to make breathing easier and clear your chest of mucus

  • use painkillers to bring down a fever and ease headaches and muscle pain

  • drink a hot lemon and honey drink to relieve a sore throat

Customer: replied 10 days ago.
I see your suggestions, so, no real medication to get, and as I have had no problems on breathing at any time, can do my gym with no problems... seems let this inflammation take its normal course
Customer: replied 10 days ago.
have had no headaches, nor muscle pain

Hi there you should go ahead with gym and should have deep breathing exercises to help clearing secretions

Customer: replied 10 days ago.
no medicine to get? Local pharmacy has most medications, just need name - await your final suggestion

Can you get any inhaler

Customer: replied 10 days ago.
I have Seretide Accuhaler at home (before prescrition - 3 years ago) and could get Ventolin at pharmacy

that's fantastic just start taking Seretide accuhaler. No need for Ventolin if taking seretide

Customer: replied 10 days ago.
OK - seems I should be OK soon. Seretide - for how many days and how many times per day??

Plus start taking Montelukast 10mg every night daily for next 2 weeks

Seretide 1 inhalation twice daily for 1-2 weeks

Customer: replied 10 days ago.
Just started typing this: Can I take Seretide Accuhaler instead of Montelukast? (As per your suggestion)?

That's fine. Best of luck
