Customer Question

Hi, just visiting Belfast and I've got a flare of gout.
JA: Have you seen a doctor about this yet? What medications are you taking?
Customer: I've been on steroids for the past 4 months, finished them about a week ago and, I'm not back to specialist until 1st December. I also have non ischemic cardiomyopathy and heart failure so, I take quite a few meds for that.
JA: What medications do you take daily? Are you allergic to any medications?
Customer: Entresto, adalactone, aspirin, burinex, allopurinol, not allergic to any meds
JA: Is there anything else the Doctor should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: Don't think so

I am sorry to hear that you have a flare up. Have you previously been told not to use anti inflammatory medication?

Customer: replied 16 days ago.
My stomach can't handle those
Customer: replied 16 days ago.
Don't mind typing

Okay so the other option is Colchicine. This however would require a prescription from a doctor local to you

Expert:  Dr Baker replied 16 days ago.

This is taken over 3 days and is very effective for gout, however it can cause diarrhoea

Customer: replied 16 days ago.
I take that also, have been for a while now
Expert:  Dr Baker replied 16 days ago.

Colchicine shouldn’t be taken more than 3 days at a time, it is not a long standing drug

Customer: replied 16 days ago.
The steroids were the only things that helped
Expert:  Dr Baker replied 16 days ago.

I see, yet finishing them has led to a recurrence?

Customer: replied 16 days ago.
I did come off them but, got a flare up again a few weeks ago and went back on them
Expert:  Dr Baker replied 16 days ago.

Okay, what is your question then please? What you are taking is the only option other than reducing your urate levels for which you already take allopurinol

Customer: replied 16 days ago.
My question is, is there anything that can give me some relief until I go home on Friday and see my own GP.?
Expert:  Dr Baker replied 16 days ago.

Given what you are taking there is nothing more to directly treat the gout. You could however try cocodamol in addition which may help.

Expert:  Dr Baker replied 16 days ago.

Lower dose coco sample is often available from a pharmacy at 8/500 which may help

Customer: replied 16 days ago.
Are they an over the counter medication?
Expert:  Dr Baker replied 16 days ago.

Yes, in England I know for sure, I would assume Belfast is the same

Customer: replied 16 days ago.
Thank you for your time

That is my pleasure, all the best
