Hello. This is Dr Geyik and I will be assisting you today.

How can I help you today?

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Hi last night I ate a tbsp spoon of milled chia seeds followed with water … I was wondering if that’s ok I haven’t experienced any bloating or pain
Customer: replied 19 days ago.
I ate them dry then swallowed water afterwards, I’ve just been to the toilet soo I was wondering would they be gone now it’s been 9 hours
Expert:  Dr Geyik, MBBS replied 19 days ago.

Can I ask if you ate milled chia seeds for a purpose or just as food?

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Just as a food
Expert:  Dr Geyik, MBBS replied 19 days ago.

I understand.

Food is generally digested in digestive system within 6 hours, but it can take up to 24-36 hours for it to be excreted from the bowels.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
is it ok ?
Expert:  Dr Geyik, MBBS replied 19 days ago.

Yes, it should be fine. They can be eaten as supplements.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Ok I just read about it blocking intestines and stuff so i got worried
Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Is there a reason you asked if I ate it as food?
Expert:  Dr Geyik, MBBS replied 19 days ago.

Because some people eat them for food and some for supplements for the purpose of omega fats and/or antioxidants.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Ok yes I knew that I just wanted to get a little extra fibre. So I should be ok? Would any adverse symptoms have started by now?
Customer: replied 19 days ago.
I suffer with anxiety very badly so I get very worried
Expert:  Dr Geyik, MBBS replied 19 days ago.

Yes, you should be fine.

If there were any issues, yes, they would have shown by now.

Also, you can read the package for eating instructions.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Ok thanks and do you mean should as I will be fine or you don’t know ? And yes I forgot to read the packet and then got worried afterwards
Expert:  Dr Geyik, MBBS replied 19 days ago.

I meant you will be fine and there won't be any issues.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Ok that’s reassuring thanks. Is there a difference between milled and whole chia? I imagine milled would be easier to digest and less likely to cause a blockage?
Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Will drinking water help to pass anything through the intestines etc
Expert:  Dr Geyik, MBBS replied 19 days ago.

Yes, milled seeds would be easer to digest. You can eat chia seeds as whole, ground, by soaking them in water, by adding to other drinks.

And yes, water generally helps with digestion.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Ok so shall I just keep drinking water, is it safe to eat
Expert:  Dr Geyik, MBBS replied 19 days ago.

Yes, you can eat normally and drink normally.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Ok I just keep seeing online that it may cause a blockage and it really worries me . Do you think this is unlikely? How often does that happen
Expert:  Dr Geyik, MBBS replied 19 days ago.

Chia seeds are commonly eaten in most countries and they are safe to eat. You ate only a very little amount and this should not cause any issues.

If you ate very large amounts, maybe it could cause issues but not a tablespoonful.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Ok thanks and the fact they are milled makes it also less likely to cause a blockage ?
Expert:  Dr Geyik, MBBS replied 19 days ago.

That is correct. Milled seeds will be digested easily and are not going to cause any blockage.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
ok great thanks so much. is there anything else you could tell me that would be reassuring ?
Expert:  Dr Geyik, MBBS replied 19 days ago.

I suggest that you do not worry about this and you can eat and drink normally.

And if you notice any new changes (which I don't think you will have), you can let us know.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Why would there be new changes
Expert:  Dr Geyik, MBBS replied 19 days ago.

I said that to reassure you so that you can relax knowing that we are here to help you.

There won't be any changes as I said above.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Ok it’s just confusing because you said anything bad would have happened by now so I don’t know why there would be any changes, sorry I have very extreme anxiety I have counselling for that
Expert:  Dr Geyik, MBBS replied 19 days ago.

I said that as a figure of speech and to reassure you.

There will not be any changes. Food gets digested in 6 hours and it has already been 9 hours in your case. There is nothing there to cause any blockage or issues.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
ok I will try to relax and not worry so much I just find it very hard
Expert:  Dr Geyik, MBBS replied 19 days ago.

No worries.
