Customer Question

My 1999 mercedes SLK has been sitting outside undriven for 6 months. The battery went completely flat. It was charged and the car started fine. However all the warning lights stay on and when driven the speedo does not work and the car does not get out of first gear. What could be the problem?

I'd say that the VSS ( Vehicle speed sensor) is faulty

this sensor is built into the electroplate in the transmisson, a common fault and easy enough for a specialist garage to change

the transmisson sump pan does have to be removed though so its usually a good idea to replace the fluid at the same time
