2001 230 slk. had 3 weeks. checked out by mercedes. all perfect. only 50000 miles.
started two days ago. very cold day. drove 15 miles. parked. came back to the car. switched on but wouldn't start. battery fine, everything working, but gear selector indicator was black. tried again 12 hours later, still the same. left the car for a day and went back. started perfectly. any suggestions.

Sorry for the delayed reply.
It is not easy to say what exactly went wrong due to intermittent nature of the symptoms. Most likely the gear selector module was not working at low temperatures. In this case, selector lever position is not clear to electronics and starter is blocked.
There should be some fault codes in transmission and selector lever control units to confirm this. These codes can be read out with Star Diagnosis computer, which some of the independent MB shops have besides the dealers.
