Customer Question

Hi Paul
I have a 2004 ML270 CDI and have just found an oil leak from the air side of the turbo (RHS looking from the front). I have also found carburised oil around the front two injectors, the rear 3 are fine. Can this be an overheating problem or something more sinister?

hello Ron if there's oil in the turbo exit then sorry to say that its very likely that the turbo oil seal has failed or is failingthe only cure is a rebuilt turbo I'm afraid

Hi Shantal. I haven't got an answer yet but I have taken a couple of photos that may help. I have been towing a Jayco campervan (1400kg) in the last 6 months which caused some problems with the automatic gear shifting and apparently was causing overheating of the transmission oil. This may or may not be part of the problem. I have taken some photos of the oil leak and the carburisation of the oil around the front two injection points.

thanks for the extra information
I 'd say that the front 2 injectors must be leaking combustion gas to look like that
so I'd suggest the next step should be to remove these injectors clean up the seats in the head and replace the copper sealing washers with new
