When I try to insert a picture into a document it always appears

When I try to insert a picture into a document it always appears as a compressed narrow band, usually at the top of the page, with a dotted outline showing the full size the insert would be if it wasn't compressed as a band at the bottom of it.
I tried to find a cure for it but without success.
I am using Word 2007 Home version.
Can you offer any suggestion?
