I have just upgraded Windows 10 and now I am unable to open a folder as I get the following note appear on the screen, " I/O device error"

Hi Brian,

This suggests the data has become corrupted, have you tried restarting windows 10 in safe mode (see the video here and see if you can access the folder). I would suggest you use the second method they show you.
