I have a Mitsubishi shogun,05 plate sport***** Recently I had it service after I drive  and apply the brakes the for wheel mechanism engages.The display light intermittently blinks and i then put it in gear.Could it also be related to the service as I had the brake pads change and why is it occurring.when i am driving i hear a thump noise then it engages the*****I have to put it in 4 wheel gear after to avoid any problems to drive futher. *****@******.***

This sounds like the common free wheel clutch solenoid pack failure, this is the pack of solenoids mounted on the frame rail under air filter. The solenoids re-direct vacuum to engage/disengage the front axle when requested. If one of the solenoids fail, it can cause incorrect direction of vacuum which can cause the 4wd to engage or disengage improperly or without manual request.

Hi you did not complete my Initial query where i asked could the service attributed to this as they changed the air filter on the vehicle


Well it's certainly "possible", but at the same time highly unlikely. Air filter replacement just doesn't require any access or airbox movement that would cause the solenoid or the vacuum lines to be disturbed.


I think this is just a coincidence at this point, you could always ask the service center if they messed with or inspected the vacuum lines to the solenoid packs, but I highly doubt they did.
