Hi .
The engine speed is sent from the RPM sensor on the side of the Injection pump .
First check the connections on the sensor and the wiring and plug .
There is one plug with 5 or 6 wires this is know to defect.
If good then the sensor is in between the pump and engine block hard job to remove will have to be done by a mech as the pump has to be removed and timing reset .
