Hi Indy, Nissan Micra 2001~have engine mangement light showing

Hi Indy,
Nissan Micra 2001~have engine mangement light showing past 4 weeks.
Been to garage and three times the mechanic managed to switch off
the light without any repairs.However this adjustment lasted only for some
50 miles and than back to light showing again.First i was told it was to do
with sensors and the latest advise:i am going to need to change engine
timing chain~apparently the wrong timing is affecting the perfarmance?
What would be your advise please?

Hi Mike .

Just clearing the malfunction codes to switch off the check engine light is not a repair .

The check should of told you what the cause was ...

If the check engine light comes on this is because the management system has encountered a malfunction with in the system and stored a code or codes .

Ones you have the codes read with a code reader then from these codes you have to do the repairs to rectify the problem so the check engine light does not come on.

If the repair is not correctly done then the check engine light will come back on.

If you know the codes please let me know what they where ..

A stretched timing chain will trip the check engine light on and store a code.
Normally when this happens you will hear the timing chain rattle at idle.

The light will come on with any system sensors that fail ..
