Hello I am extremely worried and anxious. I am just 2 weeks

Customer Question

I am extremely worried and anxious. I am just 2 weeks gestation (2 weeks since ovulation). I have been taking folic acid and B12 for months now but on occasions have also taken multivitamins which I just realised contain vitamin A (800.0ug/2666IU per day). I haven't taken them every day but once I realised I was pregnant I checked the mutivitamin bottle and noticed the presence of Vitamin A. I am terrified that I may have harmed my little baby (i.e. teratogen) and am so so worried. I feel so foolish because I felt I was doing everything right.
Many thanks

Hello Carol, and welcome to
I am Doctor Norm, and I look forward to helping you with your problem today.
While it's true that an excess of vitamin A can be harmful, the amount in most multivitamins such as yours has never been associated with harmful effects. In an important study from the New England Journal of Medicine, it was shown that women taking more than 10,000 IU daily of vitamin A had a small increase in birth defects. Even if you had been taking your multivitamins every day, I would not be concerned that you've caused any harm to your baby. I hope that's helpful.
