2012 I had a copper coil fitted after a termination, everything

Customer Question

2012 I had a copper coil fitted after a termination, everything seemed ok execept my periods became a lot more heavy and irregular. Over the years things went from bad to worse, i became very angry towards my boyfriend even my kids my personality changed from a happy mum to a deppressed antisocial person I didnt know what to do. 10 months ago the bleeding got worse, blood clots where comming out 24/7 ,the bleeding didn't stop it was like I was on my period for months. I could not carry on like this so about 2-3 months ago I went and had the coil removed. I explained to the doctor what was happening but she made me feel stupid and i my symptoms were normal. She said the bleeding will stop about 2 weeks and if they don't go and have a smear test. I have not been for a smear test as my doctor makes me feel uncomfortable and they are my family GP so I don't trust her. Thank you for reading this I look forward in hearing from you ASAP as I'm really worried. Louise

Hello Louise, and welcome.
I am Dr. Norm, and I look forward to helping you today.
Has the bleeding stopped?
What has happened with your periods since the coil was removed?
Are you using anything else now for birth control? Thank you.

No the bleeding has not stoped. I'm bleeding all the time and they are very heavy with clots. No I am not using birth control as I don't have much of a sex drive anymore. Louise

It sounds like you need a new doctor. It's certainly not normal to bleed for months at a time.
Since you are still bleeding, the problem was apparently not just due to the copper coil, since that should clear up once the coil is removed. That suggests that the bleeding is mostly due to hormones, in which case hormones will most likely cure it.
I would suggest taking birth control pills, which are the best method we have for giving a woman regular, not heavy periods, and clearing up hormonal bleeding problems.
There is a possibility that you might also have fibroid tumors of your uterus, which could add to the amount of bleeding. They can usually be discovered on pelvic exam, but sometimes an ultrasound may be needed. In case the bleeding doesn't become normal on birth control pills, then that could be investigated further.
I don't know how much freedom you have to find another doctor, but it sounds like that's what you really need to do. Even if you have to pay yourself, one visit plus the cost of birth control pills should not be excessive. Best wishes.
