Customer Question

I'd like to get an answer from a gynecologist please.
I am now 16 days late for my period (my average cycle is 31 days, the longest cycle over the past 7 months was 35 days but usually 31-32 days). I've had regular periods previously so I am obviously a bit concerned now. I have done a Clear Blue test this morning and it showed a negative result. I don't have any 'unusual' feelings as described on some specialized sites and feel very well (obviously apart from being very concerned/nervous now!).
I should add that I am 40 years old (will be 41 on 1/07).
Could I still be pregnant regardless of the test result? I had sex in the previous month but not in the 'dangerous' period, and the protection was through an withdrawal method.
I haven't spoken to a GP yet but waiting for a call from him.
I'd appreciate your advice regarding further actions. Happy to provide any additional information as needed.
Many thanks in advance.
Kind regards,

You have done clear blue test after 16 days of your missed period and it becomes negative. The accuracy of the test is 99 % and so pregnancy can be excluded easily.Still you can repeat the test by some other brand for confirmation.
Considering your usual menstrual pattern and also the age I think it is due to some hormonal imbalance.(perimenopausal symptoms) which is not uncommon at this age.
You have to do a hormone profile like estrogen, progesterone .lh and fsh and thyroid. One ultra sonography also has to be done to exclude PCOS(poly cystic ovarian syndrome)
Thank you

Thank you for your response. I have specifically mentioned my age, however, I have also mentioned that my cycle has been very regular to this month and I've never had such delays - hence my concern! So whilst I understand that some hormonal imbalance is not uncommon at this age, in my particular case it didn't seem to be the case! Again, I've had regular periods up to this month. So what can I do to 100% exclude the possibility of pregnancy? Should I ask a GP to do another test (I've heard that a blood test is more accurate)?

Also, you say, Clear Blue tests are 99% accurate, however, there are plenty of discussions on different forums where women say they had negative clear blue tests and then it turned out they were pregnant.

Regarding the hormone profile test you have suggested: should I just ask my GP for it?

Thank you.

As the HPT is highly sensitive I did not recommend blood test.
Yes you can exclude pregnancy by 100 % by beta hcg estimation in your blood.
If there is no pregnancy you should ask your doctor for your problem and I think he or she will advice you accordingly.
Thank you
