Hi. Our dog bit my husband's hand. There is a puncture to the skin, it bled slightly. He thinks the teeth may have touched the bone and it is quite painful. He has washed the wound. He did have some cotton wool over it tied around the hand but has taken it off as it was hurting hand. Can you advise if he needs antibiotic medication or some treatment like that? Or should we just dress the wound? Thanks.

I did not feel there was a suitable category for this question so just selected orthopedics.

Thank you for your question.
I will try my best to help you.
I will answer in a moment/request for further information.

How old is he?

How large is the wound?

When did it happen?

Is the dog vaccinated against rabies?

Customer: replied 6 months ago.
He is 29. It is not large - like a puncture but you can see the flesh is cut. Dog has had vaccinations but we can't remember which ones and dont have her medical card on us.

Thank you

Thank you for waiting.

I am very sorry for his symptoms.

I understand your concern.

As the dog is vaccinated, there would not be a risk for rabies.

But, if he feels it has touched the bone, I would advise to take an examination by doctor.

Any bone infection can be serious.

Please keep the part at rest & a little elevated.

This will help to reduce the swelling.

He can take Paracetamol or Ibuprofen for pain.

Now, you can apply neosporin cream.

It is available OTC.

It will fight infection

Please keep it covered with a sterile piece of gauze.

I hope this information will be helpful.

Thank you. My husband says par tof hand near wrist is slightly white, a circle shape. He thinks it's possible a vein may have been touched with the bite. Is that possible?

You are welcome.

Slightly white area can be tendon of a muscle.

It is not vein.
