Hi, I need some advice regarding my Granddaughter who is 2 years old. Last year she had 9 attacks of Acute Tonsillitis often accompanied by Febrile Convulsions. In June 2013 she spent 4 days in ITU with Acute Tonsillitis and Complex Febrile Convulsions. Ultimately we were advised to have her tonsils removed and so she had an Adenotonsillectomy in October 2013.
Since then she has continued to have Upper Respiratory Tract Infections. Since October 2013 she has had 3 ear infections (fluid behind the eardrum) and 1 chest infection, all of these infections have included a red throat.
Last Wednesday she started with what appears to be Gastroenteritis, we couldn't get her to keep any fluids down and she had a Febrile Convulsion on Friday 3rd May which resulted in her being admitted to hospital. In addition to the Gastroenteritis, she has another ear infection. She was discharged from hospital after an overnight stay. It has completely knocked her off her feet this time, all she has done since last Wednesday is sleep and cry, she has no energy whatsoever
I'm worried about the number of infections that she gets, she's on antibiotics nearly every month.
She has always had a very poor appetite. She bruises easily. More worryingly she has recently started to mention 'random' aches and pains. She will say she has a 'poorly back' or 'poorly leg' etc
Otherwise in between infections she is fine and her development is normal
She was delivered by C Section at full term.
What really concerns me is that she was conceived only 6 months after her Father had finished a 12 month course of chemotherapy for Hodgkins Lymphoma
Could she have a low immunity or is this normal? Apart from when she was in ITU last year, she has never had any bloodwork done

Dr. Yogindra Vasavada :

Hello Jan, Sorry about this problem with granddaughter. She apparently has immune deficiency and needs work-up for immune system like immune globulins IgG, IgM etc as well as cellular immune system. She could be helped by externally administered combined immune globulins if this is the problem, to prevent repeated infections. You could also keep her away from other children and adults having minor infections with respiratory symptoms.

Dr. Yogindra Vasavada :

She may also benefit from correction of any anemia or calcium, vitamin D deficiency if detected on blood work.

Dr. Yogindra Vasavada :

The fact that father had chemotherapy in past for hodgkin's, does not matter in causation of her illness attacks.
